Did You Know: Farming
Centuries ago, farms were the foundation for establishing and building towns. If land was able to be sowed to produce an on-going supply of fruit, vegetables, grains, and meat, then it was a good place to settle, build communities, roads and schools. Farming, also known as agriculture, began in 8000BC in a region called Mesopotamia, today parts of Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and Syria. The word farm comes from the French word "firma", meaning "fixed payment" and the Latin word "firmus", meaning "firm, solid". When the practice of farming started, a landowner would hire farmers to harvest the land and run a farm, rather than running it himself. Eventually, farming became a respectable and profitable industry, and many landowners took on the task themselves.
